I have a really good book to help make baby food - it's called "Super Baby Food" by Ruth Yaron. You do have to read it after reading Nourishing Traditions though, because Ruth Yaron does not know about phytates or soaking grains and legumes. So I adjust the recipes accordingly.
An interesting recipe in this book is how to make pure vanilla extract. It's actually quite easy and you can make 6 months worth for the price of 1 or 2 bottles of pure vanilla extract (which costs about $4 or more per bottle).
Go to your local health food or bulk store and purchase pure vanilla beans. Cut and slice them length-wise, and place them in a sterilized baby food jar. Add vodka to the top. Close the lid and place in a dark cupboard for about 3 weeks - shaking every day or so.
That's it! As you use the vanilla and it starts to dwindle, just add more vodka, shake, and put away and repeat the process. The beans should last about 6 months.
FYI: The amount of alcohol you use in pure vanilla extract is very minor and usually evaporates out during mixing.

This looks easy. How many vanilla beans do you put in each jar?
Thanks.
I too read nourishing traditions (and anything i could get my hands on) about phytates and soaking etc., then I ran across an awesome Christian lady who, along with her husband (and 7 children) run a bread making company (and so much more) called Bread Beckers. Under "Information" on her site (www.breadbeckers.com) you can find a bunch of articles she's written. Two stood out to me... "Bread of Idleness" and "Phytic Acid-Friend or Foe)They might be worth your reading...
Hi Suzy Q,
Thank you for that article about Phytic Acid. I have actually been ordering from the Bread Beckers for several years. So I am very familiar with their website. This article is very enlightening. I have been praying about the information in Nourishing Traditions for a while because I know they are not christians and therefore is their wisdom from the Lord? That's been my question. I'll keep reading and researching. Thanks again! Patricia
