Jeremiah 6:16a "Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls..."
Old ways are not always godly ways, but when they are they are wort

I had heard of McGuffey readers before but didn't give them much thought. After all they are old right? Except that millions of children were educated in the USA using these readers. This was before education was reformed and God was removed from curricula everywhere. Not only that, but these readers are challenging both spiritually and academically.
At first I was tempted to buy the workbooks that go along with them. However, in my quest to have a more "Charlotte Mason" style of education in our home, I avoided them. I ended up buying our McGuffey's from Mott media. I also bought a set from Mardels in Oklahoma when I was there visiting. I have also downloaded the revised primer (written in the 1900's) online to go along with our phonics and reading lessons for my 5 year old. I just print them up and put them into a binder.
Personally, I prefer Mott media's reprints (except for teaching phonics, I prefer the revised edition) because they are the original 1836 versions that William McGuffey first published. These books are filled with wonderful character building stories, and God is taught throughout. Mott media also has a teacher's guide that Ruth Beechick wrote, which is a wonderful aid, and it can be used with very little or no preparation.
I'll post later on how we use these each day. What I love most about these, is that almost each day, the stories lead us into a discussion about virtues of character and biblical doctrine. These books make it easy for parents to both teach academics and teach about God all at the same time.
I have also downloaded Ray's arithmetic and recently ordered this on CD from dollar homeschool. Dollarhomeschool.com has removed the arithmetic answers found in these readers which I prefer for my young brood. I plan to have these comb bound for my children. I'll post an update soon.
